Cloud storage is a beautiful thing. Convenience and flexibility are precious commodities when it comes to growing and scaling an organization—and when remaining innovative and responsive.
Of course, despite its numerous benefits, cloud storage still has drawbacks. Depending on your use case, your mileage may vary wildly, especially when it comes to compliance with regulations.
If you’ve already chosen to store your data in the cloud and have concerns, this blog post is for you.
The definition of “the cloud” is a bit of a misnomer. Your data must live somewhere. Whether it’s on a single server or spread out across multiple servers, your data still has to live in some physical location.
Often, the locations at which your data are stored will be different (perhaps as a commonsense security precaution). But of course, these options are easily adjusted. You have every reason to want control over where your data gets stored. And depending on what your data is, location may be critical for compliance and SLAs.
For example, depending on your use case or your client’s needs, you may need to keep your cloud data in the state from which you or they operate.
Fortunately, you do have some degree of control over your cloud services. The biggest cloud services — Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft
(Azure), and Google Cloud Platform (GCP) — all allow you to choose where your data is stored (and where it gets replicated). It’s critical for any cloud data storage provider to provide this level of control over your data.
Outside of major providers, many smaller cloud storage providers also offer this granular control over the location of your data. However, some may not. It’s essential to check with each provider to ensure that your needs are met.
The next pressing issue is selecting the most optimal provider. Who do you trust to provide the best cloud storage solution for you? Should you work with multiple vendors? And what kind of additional security and support will you need?
